1. In a little district west of Washington Square,Sue and Johnsy had their studio at the top of a squatty, three-story brick. 在華盛頓廣場(chǎng)西邊的一個(gè)小區(qū)里,蘇和瓊西的畫(huà)室設(shè)在一所又寬又矮的三層樓磚房的頂樓上。
2. “Johnsy” was familiar for Joanna. One was from Maine; the other from California. 一、清晰的文章結(jié)構(gòu)
葉子是一條線索,把松散的全文串聯(lián)起來(lái)。作者對(duì)葉子的描寫(xiě)貫穿全文。作者把大量筆墨放在葉子的生長(zhǎng)環(huán)境上,著重突出其生長(zhǎng)環(huán)境的逐步惡化。小說(shuō)先寫(xiě)到約翰西一片一片地?cái)?shù)著葉子,狂風(fēng)暴雨中的葉子,這樣惡劣的天氣情況,多像約翰西此時(shí)的處境――艱苦的經(jīng)濟(jì)條件還有最?lèi)廊说姆窝?。接著是黑夜里愈加無(wú)情的風(fēng)雨,我們對(duì)藤上那片脆弱的葉子已經(jīng)不抱希望了。但風(fēng)雨過(guò)后,拉開(kāi)窗簾,呈現(xiàn)在我們眼前的葉子卻充滿生機(jī)。葉子的頑強(qiáng)也喚醒了約翰西的求生欲望,她的健康狀況逐漸好轉(zhuǎn),最終轉(zhuǎn)危為安。而這片葉子,恰恰是貝爾曼用自己的生命創(chuàng)作的最偉大的作品。至此,一個(gè)老畫(huà)家舍己救人的故事脈絡(luò)清晰地展現(xiàn)在讀者眼前。
二、細(xì)致的人物描寫(xiě)
蘇和約翰? 約翰西患上重病,蘇盡心盡力地照顧她。蘇安慰約翰西,鼓勵(lì)她說(shuō)康復(fù)的可能性非常大。
從醫(yī)生對(duì)待約翰西的一些細(xì)節(jié),我們可以看出,醫(yī)生不僅醫(yī)術(shù)高明,而且很體貼,充滿人道主義。為了不增加約翰西的心理負(fù)擔(dān),他從不當(dāng)面談?wù)撍牟∏椤?/p>
關(guān)于約翰西,我們應(yīng)該看到的是她回心轉(zhuǎn)意后堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的意志?;腥淮笪蚝?,堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的意志幫助約翰西戰(zhàn)勝了可怕的疾病。她那頑強(qiáng)的生命力值得我們欽佩。
貝爾曼是小說(shuō)的靈魂人物。作者首先描繪了貝爾曼怪異的長(zhǎng)相,然后講述了他在藝術(shù)上的失敗,刻畫(huà)了一個(gè)窮困潦倒、脾氣怪癖、沒(méi)有同情心的形象。可是從“Old Behrman,with his red eyes plainly streaming”,我們又感受到了貝爾曼對(duì)約翰西的關(guān)心。除此之外,有關(guān)貝爾曼的描寫(xiě)主要只有最后一段,通過(guò)蘇的話,我們仿佛看到了貝爾曼冒著暴風(fēng)雨,費(fèi)力地在墻上畫(huà)出那片紫藤葉的場(chǎng)景。至此,一個(gè)無(wú)私奉獻(xiàn)的形象躍然紙上,一顆赤子之心令人動(dòng)容。
三、“歐?亨利式的結(jié)尾”
歐?亨利常常在結(jié)尾處使故事情節(jié)陡然反轉(zhuǎn),一切出乎讀者所料,但細(xì)思一切又在情理之中。作者往往從文章一開(kāi)始就逐步埋下伏筆,一步步引導(dǎo)情節(jié)的發(fā)展,到了結(jié)尾處則一語(yǔ)道破?!蹲詈笠黄~子》敘述了約翰西覺(jué)得最后一片葉子預(yù)示著自己的生命,然而隨著最后一片葉子扛過(guò)了狂風(fēng)暴雨的肆虐,約翰西找到了活下去的勇氣,但文章開(kāi)始并未提及為何這片葉子能夠幸存下來(lái),直到最后一段作者才借蘇的口道明一切――那片“頑強(qiáng)的葉子”是前文中給我們留下壞印象的貝爾曼用生命畫(huà)下的。
四、人性美
(一)友誼
作為好朋友,蘇為約翰西的健康擔(dān)憂不已,但還要表現(xiàn)得很樂(lè)觀來(lái)安慰約翰西,忍受約翰西的冷淡。這就是友誼。是友誼讓兩個(gè)曾經(jīng)毫不相識(shí)的人走在一起,讓兩顆心的距離變得這么近。
(二)奉獻(xiàn)
一個(gè)相貌怪異,脾氣怪癖的老頭,一個(gè)“藝術(shù)上的失敗者”,畫(huà)出了世界上最偉大的作品,因?yàn)樗幸活w無(wú)私奉獻(xiàn)、舍己為人的心。當(dāng)他看到最一片葉子在風(fēng)雨中搖搖欲墜時(shí),他一言不發(fā),用自己的生命畫(huà)出了他盼了一輩子的杰作。原本生命垂危的約翰西活了下來(lái),貝爾曼卻因?yàn)槟昀象w衰,兩天后就死于醫(yī)院?;蛟S這并不是貝爾曼生命的終? 只要有奉獻(xiàn),世界就有希望。
(三)關(guān)愛(ài)社會(huì)
那最后一片葉子傳達(dá)的是貝爾曼那無(wú)私奉獻(xiàn)的精神。我們?yōu)橐粋€(gè)平凡人所具有的高尚品格所震撼。在19世紀(jì)初期,美國(guó)社會(huì)異常功利和冷酷。當(dāng)時(shí)的社會(huì)矛盾異常突出,人性也變得扭曲。生活在社會(huì)底層的作者對(duì)此擔(dān)憂不已,但他知道,在小人物之間還有著溫暖和希望。于是他寫(xiě)了《最后一片葉子》,他描寫(xiě)了一片紫藤葉,向社會(huì)傳達(dá)希望。他希望喚醒人們心中對(duì)真善美的追求,呼吁世人盡其所能拯救這個(gè)社會(huì),重建這個(gè)社會(huì)。他把對(duì)社會(huì)的關(guān)愛(ài)融進(jìn)小人物的友誼和奉獻(xiàn)中,把對(duì)社會(huì)的關(guān)愛(ài)寫(xiě)進(jìn)這部小說(shuō)的每一個(gè)字里。
